Geordie Bullets Latest Bimble

October 2011

this was never planned as a bimble, it started as just an overnight stay in perth for the mrs and me courtesy of a cheap £12 a night travelodge deal.then the mrs sister asks to join us as her man is away golfing all weekend.a plan started to form, if we were to go up in the van i could stick the cub in the back and when they went shopping i could sneak out for a bimble round the back roads of beautiful perthshire, but where to go ???
a visit to kew gardens in the summer led me to an ebay book purchase when i got home ,THE ANCIENT HERITAGE TREES OF BRITAIN.seeing as there is,nt a single bloody ancient tree listed in the book in tyneside or northumberland i noticed that perthshire seemed to have ancient trees in abundance, when i looked at a few of the trees locations on the map it automatically laid out a perfect bimble route from perth to glasgow over what looked like quiet backroads through valleys and old mountain passes, thats it then , ancient tree bimble it is !!

DAY 1

CAPON OAK, JEDBURGH , 500 YEARS OLD

THE KING TREE, SWEET CHESTNUT, 400 YEARS OLD

MEIKLEOUR BEECH HEDGE, 166 YEARS OLD

offically recorded as the worlds largest beech hedge at 120 ft

DAY 2

when i was twenty , if someone had told me then that when i reached 50 years old i,d be spending the night in a scottish hotel with two sisters and that i would,nt get a wink of sleep all night i would of snatched his hand off, turns out i got the sleepless night i,d dreamed of, one was a proffesional snorer and the other could fart louder than the qe2, what a bloody noise !! i sneaked out early and headed for the next ancient tree

THE FORTINGALL YEW, OVER 5000 YEARS OLD

the most ancient tree in the uk and probably
europe,s oldest living thing.its now enclosed
by a wall to protect it.its now reduced to a few seperate segments
but if you look in the 2nd picture at the circular wooden pegs, this shows
the trees circumference at the trees peak when it measured 56ft

for such an ancient tree it still shows
a good healthy canopy of leaves above
its enclosure

THE GLEN LYON ASH, 300-400 YEARS OLD

i found this gem of a ford by the side
of the road

i thought about having a go but it was over a ft
deep with a rocky bottom plus this washboard
section was just to the right of it if i got
it wrong.

THE POLLOK PARK BEECH, 250 YEARS OLD

the tree looks like a alien sneaking
up on my mrs in this picture { proffessional
farter, one blast of her exhaust would drop that
tree no probs }.

and that was it, bimble over. while
you jammy gits were enjoying your
mini heatwave last weekend down south
it rained both days in scotland but it
did,nt spoil it one bit, the swirling
mists made some great pics.
one other good thing about visiting the
trees at this time of year was i got to
collect some ancient seeds from the floor.

watch this space, i might be a tree
dad next spring.

cheers , GB

2010

right then, bit of an epic this one, loads of photos so i will keep my waffling to a minimum, and let the pictures tell the story.
just diddly and myself free to get out on this one.i don,t know what it is but the more bimbles we go on here in the north east the dafter they get,so here,s the daftest yet....
it started with a run up through the back roads heading towards rothbury, as we headed over the moors a GIANT yellow wasp flew right over our heads,
WTF WAS THAT !!! we stopped to take a closer look.turns out we,ve stumbled upon a model areoplane flying club and the giant yellow shadow that had flown directly 30ft over our heads was an 8 ft long yellow model plane, we nearly sh.t ourselves. you might just be able to see it on the ground in the distance, we waited for it to take off again but it never did.

another smaller model takes to the skys

on we travelled through rothbury , up the a68 stopping for a cuppa in the layby on the
english/scottish border.

after 10 minutes about
20 monkey bikes pulled in, they were on a full
weekend run, very similar to our weekend in
wales. some of the monkey bikes were stunning.

this one had over £4000 spent on it incl £2000 on the head and barrel, the lad told me he had put different gearing on it and had it on a rolling road and it showed 105 MPH.in its normal form it was good for 80-90 mph

this lad was straight over to look at the mileage on my cub, ahh its just a bairn !!! i,ve got a cub engine in mine thats done 77.000 miles. every time he stops to fuel up he has to top the oil up but its still going strong

they mounted up and were soon on there way

i know some of the lads here own monkey bikes
so i,ll put this link up and you can check
there run out. keep scanning down as theres
about 30 pics on there. they,d booked a band
to play in the pub for them on the sat night, looks like they had a great time

into scotland we headed, it would,nt be a north
east bimble without a ford to cross, we found
this one just outside hawick. diddly gets ready
to splash his way through

idiot at work

now this is where it all went wrong. the guide
said there was two fords within a mile of each
other, there was actually 3 !! if you went the
right way you would find another ford just like
the last one pictured, IF you went the wrong way
you ended up in the middle of nowhere, guess
which way we went.... correct, the wrong way!!
it all started so well, we trundled up a bumpy
lane following a farmer pulling a horse box with
his landrover. is this the right way diddly ?, we
stopped to consult our map, we were on an tiny
road shown as two dotted lines, thats an
unclassified road/ bridleway....i think,,maybe !!
but look, it cuts across the countryside and links to the road to st marys loch where we were
heading, it,ll save us miles by not having to
double back to hawick.
looking back now diddly, i think there was a
massive hint waiting for us around the corner.
the farmer had parked his landrover and horsebox
sideways across the road, it must have
taken him 10 shunts to position it like that.we
entered into a disscussion with the farmer and
after 5 mins we squeezed past his blockade as he
stood watching us hands on hips. he was cool
though and waved us on our way [ with 2 fingers ].
we found the ford , proper poxy thing it was an
all, not worth a picture. on we went on our
connecting road for 10 mins.we were down to two
wheel tracks with grass in the middle now.

on we bimbled for another 10 mins untill we arrived here.

SHIT, DIDDLY WERE LOST !! as understatements go....if you turned full circle there was nothing
miles of countryside everywhere , not even a hint of a road.we looked at each other puzzled,
right, you go left diddly and i,ll try straight
on, meet back here in 10 minutes.we decided
on this way, got a bridleway look to it.

on for another 10 mins and we found the road we
had been looking for, not much of a road mind,
but it did us just fine. we came out of it
unharmed and undamaged although my footrests had
now turned green.

a few miles further on and we pulled in at this
scenic spot for a cuppa.diddly makes with the
flask and snacks.

.

on we travelled up to the cafe at st marys loch.

we had the pleasure of meeting hunter from
edinburgh there.we,d set the meeting up via
the message board. thanks for waiting hunter, it was great to meet you.he was on his big yamaha,
not his cub, as he was making the best of the weather
and getting the miles in.cant blame you either
as the scenery was stunning!! a couple of pics
of hunters superb yamaha

we bid hunter a fond farewell as we went on our
seperate ways.we headed across country now toward
moffat and lockerbie.the scenery was stunning.

we stopped in tescos car park in lockerbie to
fuel up.i,ve passed lockerbie many times on
route to scotland over the years and i,ve always
wanted to stop and see the memorial for the air
diaster, i,ve never managed it before yet here we
were in the town.a quick word with diddly and as ever he was cool and easy going, so we set off
for the cemetary half a mile out of town to see
the garden of rememberance and to pay our respects.

it was a lovely peacefull spot and a chance to
remember the innocent lives lost all those
years ago.i think its important that there not
forgotten so it was real nice to pay a visit.

as i pulled out of the car park there was a
surprise waiting for me, the punture fairy
had paid me a visit, casting her magic on my
front tyre, nice one b.tch !!!

lucky it was the front tyre so i put a fresh tube
in. once again we were back in the sh.t,this is getting regular now , it was getting dark and we were MILES from home.
we came off the a69,
which connects carlisle and newcastle, half way along and onto the military road which runs
parralell to the a69 but runs alongside hadrians
wall. this roman road runs straight as an arrow
which is handy when you got a 10 watt bulb for
a headlight.diddly tucked in behind me, talk about the blind leading the blind, i could,nt see a thing, it was pich black.
diddly and i parted company just outside newcastle and went home our different ways.
and so ended another great bimble, they just keep getting better
and better[ and dafter !!].
thanks yet again diddly for your company, im
already looking forward to the next one.
cheers, pete

A few pictures of last weekends bimble
over to the lakes to share with you all.
only diddly and myself made this one so
we set off on a direct route over with
the intention of spending more time
going over the big passes once we got
there. we where both surprised how busy
it was, keswick was mobbed so we had a
quick cuppa then hit the road. 1st stop
was this view over derwent water.

After doing a loop and arriving back at the
bikers carpark at keswick we had a chat with
some old timer who came straight over when
he clocked the cub. he loved it and it brought
old memories back for him.we left at the
same time as a group of women who had been standing next to us, they where all riding
harleys. they took the p.ss outa my 5 ltr fuel
can as we where leaving so just for bad diddly
and me tagged on the back of there group and
blew there street cred by keeping up with them
all the way to lake windermere as they cruised
along at 45-50 mph

we paused after crossing the lake on the ferry
to see this beautiful big porsche who was 1st
in the que to go back over. unfortunately this
was as far as he got, the loading ramp was to
steep and his front spoiler was digging in, so
he had to sheepishly reverse back, turn around
and drive the long way round oh dear .

we then hit some of the big steep passes
this was hardknott pass, as steep as 1 in 3
in places

we stopped at the minature railway at
eskdale for a cuppa in the cafe. we only
just caught it as it was closing and i
got the very last dog eared tired sarnie
left.
eskdale is the end of the line for the
train so the driver has to uncouple the
train and switch it onto another line to
re-attach it at the other end for the
journey back. none of your pulley type
reduction gears on this turntable just two
wheels so a little run with a
big shoulder barge swings her o,er onto the
other line

the light was fading as i took this pic
of innova and cub next to ullswater as we
where leaving the lakes for the journey
home

and that was another superb bimble over
240 miles coverd for me, 260 i think for
diddly, i got home in the dark at half
ten, the last half hour we got blasted by
big moths bouncing off us and we chugged
on home thru the dark.

great stuff
cant wait for the next bimble.

thanks diddly for your company.

North East Coast Jaunt

A few pics from last sundays little jaunt
north up the coast.evo diddly and myself
headed up to ashington to see iains restored
cub for the 1st time.he,s squeezed a 125 motor
into what was a 70 cub, this now makes me the
tiddler of the bunch riding a 90 with evo and
diddly on 125 innovas.
we headed north via a compulsory fish and chips
stop at seahouses, then banburgh cutting across
the a1 toward wooler. we stopped at chillingham
castle which is supposed to be britains most
haunted.i picked up a leaflet there which i read
with a cuppa when i got home. i spotted this paragraph- CASTLE GHOST TOURS ,walk at NIGHT
behind the doors of chillingham castle, tour
through the haunted rooms of the castle and join
the blue boy, lady mary berkeley and john sage the torturer and many other ghosts !!!
our 1st sight of the castle was this proud fella
sat on his horse

we then managed to squeeze past the car park
and get in front of the castle for this pic,
iain keeps a lookout for any stray ghosts !

looks pretty spooky in the daylight

the geordie crew now up to four
l-r iain, diddly and evo

northern dayglow trendsetters
l-r geordie bullet, evo and diddly

we then headed north to the picture postcard
village of etal where thatched roofs are still
the norm. 1st point of call the black bull inn
for ice cold liquid refreshment , here iain
sprints to be 1st in to the bar, or was it for
the toilet iain, cant remember now.

we wanderd down the village to check out
the old castle remains

one thing we had to do was check out the big
ford which crosses the river just past the
castle. i think it was diesel dave who put
up the excellent link wetroads which lists
all the fords in your county. this one was
listed as 70 ft across and 6 inches to 1 ft
deep depending on the holes you hit crossing
it. i dipped the front wheel in and it WAS
DEEP, will i, wont i, should i, OR SOD IT !
off i went, a steady throttle all the way
over and she made it !!

only problem now was i had to get back, steady again 3 qtr way over then you hit the deep 1ft
bit so i nailed it, i got 4 ft up the bank then
it conked out, drowned ! 3 kicks later she bursts
back into life, YES !!, i knew she would,nt let me down and thats why i love her so.

a steady ride back ended the day and what a great day it was, hot sunny summers day. cant
wait for the next one !!

cheers ,

Pete,
