Rhayader 2009
By Aiden Browne
Well folks finally got the computer going again. Ireland came under attack from Hackers and our main internet provider went down for the last 3 days. Denial of service attack. Anyway it gave me time to get the photos and videos sorted.
Just to say firstly it was brilliant to meet up with all the old faces and put faces to a lot of new people that made the effort to come.
I had been in the garage for a week solid every night trying to get the trike sorted and with 10 minutes before I had to be at ferry I bodged a mudguard and set off in the rain with my brother Noel and the lads from Tipperary Alan, Barry and Paul. Just made the ferry and reached the far side with blue skies and things were looking up
.
Then 3/4 mile from the ferry at the top of Fishguard and with limited testing I found the limits of the trike and flipped it braking fairing lights seat back brake (which I'll come to later). Anyway it started again and away for a 90 mile jaunt to Rhayader. Arrived to a deserted campsite at around 8.30pm
Seen a lot of bikes and no people then I realised why, there were millions of midges that tried to eat us alive. Fired up the tent and went looking for the heavy gang.
Didn't have far to go, called into the Eagles and spotted the usual suspects. Had a good night and went to bead at a reasonable hour after surviving the walk home and not rolling off into oblivion down the side of the bank.
Day 2 started off well weatherwise and it was off to the Eagles for breakfast and when we returned to the campsite I was delighted to see the Prof was on the rounds.
. Had a really good chat and in no time it was off for the bimble. Bogger has covered all the adventures that were had on it. Great route from green lanes to fast sweeping roads. Missed the Lead mine scrambling this year as the retirement bike gang has stolen our parking space
.
Paul flew by me on the rim and I realised he was trying to catch alan who had a spare tube. Pulled in and within minute with the help of Salty, Neil and the lads the tube was changed and then changed for the second time. (Faulty Rubber
). It was great to see the line up in Aber.. onlookers didn't know what was happening.
James I think spotted a nut in a critical area of the bike missing(the area that stops it snapping in half)
and I set off by Fuzz at the lights to find a Halfords or something only to look behind me and find the whole convoy following me. Sorry lads
. Anyway found a quick fit garage and got a nut to get going again. Thats when the rain started to really fall. But it couldn't put a dampner on the day even though everyone was soaked.
Just passed Newt Salad on the mountain section home when splutter, cough, splutter the bike died. Told everone to go on and Alan and Barry stayed with me. Knew it was water in the carb. Took off the Sponge air filter and actually wrung half a glass of water out of it. Drained the carb bowl. One kick and away.
.
Came back to the campsite and came a bit hard down the track braked 50 feet away and only had the freont brake from the accident. Skidded and life went into slow motion Ok bikes getting closer -- closer OK let go of brake still no turning. Bang mowed Noels bike down and drove it into my own tent and then I noticed the other bike. I think the trike was still moving when I picked up Lees bike. Luckily no damage and only 3 people have seen me. No such look about 15 people all in under the Awning busting themselves laughing.![]()
.
Anyway Lee hope the whiplash is better and our solicitors will be in contact
.
Had a really great meal down in the hotel and how the waitress didn't eject us I'll never know but Paul ended up getting very up close when we were leaving. On to the Eagles again and the laugh we had with JJ's lung tester. I can't put up the photos as they could be misconstrewed in the wrong circumstances. Have a video of the local guy though. Still laughing now thinking of it.
. See below.
Next morning up early for the eagles breakfast and met the Prof again. Thanks for the BMW gear I hope I can get the weather to really appreciate it now. We all had plans to go to the show as usual but I had the ferry times out by half an hourr and we had to go quick.
.
Uneventful journey back and just about made the ferry where there was the Australia Indian owners club on board going to tour Ireland. We got locked into the hold the amount of time we spent looking at the bikes which were immaculate.
We got off the ferry in Rosslare and Noel said his bike felt funny. After about 5 minutes of wondering why his bike felt like riding a lump of jelly I discoved the back wheels spokes were all really loose. When the guy tied down the bike to the ship he must have nearly snapped the ratchet tightening it.
. Anyway it got him home. 150 yards from my house the trike shed it's rear sprocket carrier into the ditch.
I still can't find it I need to get a metal detector. I wouldn't mind only it's the only truly unique part of the bike that can't be replaced as it's a splined shaft. Anyway I'll find it I hope.
We'll would I do it again after all the hardship. Hell yes and I hope I can meet all the heads again next year. If you still awake here's some photo's and videos.

Posted by CubTony, Poole on 12/7/2009, 3:41 pm| I havent really got time to write a full report as Im knackered, but it was great to finally meet all the regulars on this board - Boo, JJ, Bogger etc etc.. Fuzz and Sue, plus the many other names. Cheers to Newt for the beers, didnt get to see you before we left as I think you were probably sleeping off the beers from the night before. A great rideout on the Saturday with beautiful scenery, and I have never felt so intimidating and proud riding my 90 through "Aber" along with 20 plus others taking over that town and prom for afternoon "Best laugh I have had in ages". A really friendly bunch all in all so I couldnt have asked for more being a Rhayader first timer. Will look forward to seeing those videos Boo. |

Hi Brian, in a word- blinding! A truly fantastic weekend, the guys & girls off cub90 are legend! You've got to put it in your diary for next year, Rhayader is Glastonbury for Cubs!
I'll forgive you for not turning up- even though on the strength of which | took a 50, , and was the only one!
I think that because it's not a club as such, with no hierarchy, treasurers, chairman, wan***s, etc. everyone is so unpretensious, it just works! There's no Menial Thargoids trying to become Tin Gods, no -one trying to ingratiate themselves with anyone else, it was just so refreshing!
As a boring old 50 year old, I have to say, I wasn't embarassed either by any antics, there was no gratuitous swearing, no loud music, no donuts roaring around the campsite, and as the last to leave, I can tell you there wasn't even a trace of litter.
Yet given the above, it was FAR from boring, I laughed until in tears at some of the antics! it was an amazing gathering of like minded people, and A.G as the youngest one there did not feel out of place. Cubs unite the princes and paupers, (as if u can tell which is which...)and the old and the young.
Also what I found interesting was meeting people who had NEVER posted on any of the boards! It seems for everyone who posts, there is one at least who only reads!
In fact, one such person had bought a Cub solely to join in the sheenanigans! (and hasn't been disapointed!)
So to EVERYONE who reads this, try to be at Rhayader (Raider) next year, even if you have to get a train, and begs a 'backie'. ( I took a spare helmet....)
Cos' it was b+**+Y great!
On the weeks running up to Rhayader, it took allot of persuading from Newt to finally get me to agree to come, and even then i was unsure. So Tuesday it was finally set in stone we would be going! and we would be going on the cubs!! Out come the tents, small ones!, and all the miniature camping gear we have collected for motorbike touring and kayaking. Decided i'd get my head down early to crack on in the morning (plus I need my beauty sleep) and left Newt up playing with maps and deciding the route.
Up Wednesday morning, and out come the cubs ready to load up for our expected departure on the Thursday. Drag my 90 out the shed, all nice and shiny, first kick and away I go across the garden. Drag Newts bike out, cant get it going, he finally gets it going only to discover the rattle fairy has paid a visit! after deciding it would never make it, it was time for an engine change. no hiccups, nice easy swap and away he goes down the lane, only to get round the back of the block where it snaps its chain. Bye Bye engine casing! Bit of liquid metal, the old flywheel cover, and its running again! But we were no where near being ready to leave for the Thursday.
The drive Wednesday night.
Thursday morning we awoke to the sound of rain. Not the sound you want to be hearing when leaving for such a long journey! And we still had doubts in our mind abuot Newts liquid metal engine casing holding up for the journey! So it was soon decided we were best to go in the van. Quick adjustment of a few things on the van and we were set to go. One 90 on the back, and the 50 inside the van (90 wouldn't fit). By now it was decided we would leave in the morning (fri)
Up in the morning, phone the camp-site, no hard standing. Eventually found a space on the Gigrin Farm site up the road, and decided this was best with the rain we had forecast. So off we set. arrived at Gigrin farm late, piled onto the 90's to go to the other site to discover what was going on. The Irish lads had just arrived and were pitching their tents while telling us tales of flipping the trike coming off of the ferry, and explaining why the rust cub was so rusty with them not having MOT's in Ireland. Cubtony was around, but wanting to get down the pub to avoid the midges! Before he was eaten alive! At this point my stomach had other plans, and I needed food. Headed back to the van to get something to eat. After a late tea it was decided the best thing to do was for us to get our heads down ready for the bimble in the morning. "I'll set my alarm for 7:30" Newt say's, "OK I wont bother"........
"Newt, It's 9 O clock...."
"(insert very clever use of the French language)"
No breakfast, no tea, on the bikes and gone. Arrive at the other camp-site with more introductions, and many new faces to match with familiar names from the boards!!
Time for the bimble.....
It was decided that we would go down into Rhayader for petrol to make sure we all got to Aberystwyth, unfortunately with the vast amount of us wanting to fuel up not everyone was finished when the pack decided to leave, myself and Newt included. This meant that 8 of us were left in Rhayader trying to decide where the others had gone down at the cross roads. No clues. So instead of getting upset about it it was decided we would make our own way to Aberystwyth via the dams. With only 8 of us being in a group (and Newt on his 50) it meant that the pace was reasonably slow, which was lovely as we got plenty of time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. The dams really were an amazing thing, and I would love to return when we have more rain to see them over pouring. By now it was starting to rain, this wasn't a problem as everyone had planned ahead and was already in their wet gear. On to Aberystwyth we went.
In Aberystwyth there wasn't any sign of the others. Eventually we managed to contact them and discovered that they would be 45 minutes. This allowed Newt the time for his swim he was determined he was going to have before he left. Its not often you see a middle aged man running down the beach in his Y-fronts like a 5 year old!!! I had a breakfast baguette to hide the embarrassment behind!
Eventually the others arrived. It was brilliant watching and hearing that vast amount of Honda cubs come down the high street. We were told 7 were still to come as one of the Irish lads had got a puncture, and managed to use two new tubes fixing it Not long and they were with us. Few more pictures then it was off to another coastal town.
Eventually we arrived in Bow, and by now it was pouring. A few quick snaps were taken here before it was back on the cubs and down to Aberystwyth to get more fuel for the return journey. I will never be able to put into words what it was like to see 33 cubs riding through a main town at rush hour. All I can say was that it was amazing!
The return journey was similar to the way we had first gone going to Aberystwyth with a few minor changes. It rained the whole way back, and with the weather not being the best, it was a spirited run home. Newt was on the 50 and kept lagging behind so it was decided that you where responsible for the person behind you in ensuring they knew where to go at each turning. This worked great unless you were last! eventually we all formed back into a group midway and allowed time for the 50 to cool down as it was now minutes from melting as water hissed off every part of the engine. With the 50 cool we pressed on. The second half was uneventful other than the trike deciding it didn't want to go past the 50 and slowing down to the same speed while overtaking and then giving up. Something along the lines of Paper filter+water+petrol+carb = BIG NO NO. Float bowl was drained, and off it went again.
Now it must be mentioned that when the trike was flipped the rear brake was broken. So when the trike came roaring down the field only to plow into two bikes causing a domino effect between them, and eventually landing on a tent, it brought much amusement to all the wet faces stood under the awnings. Apart from H the dog, Who's bike was involved.
Wet gear off, and time for beer Conversations where ablaze everywhere under the awnings as everybody met everybody and conversation began. I must say it was amazing talking to everybody. Everybody was really friendly and coming from all walks of life, and all parts of the country, all had amazing story's to tell. Then it was time to get down the pub for more drinking and conversation, as well as a kebab for dinner
After Newt showing me how well he could see in the dark and falling down a flight of stone steps taking a chunk out of his knee, it was decided it was time for bed.
Not much occurred on the Sunday. Some people got up early and left, and some of us stayed. Off for a walk around the vintage show in town and then back to play with my power kite (some wind would have been good!), while newt tinkered with his bike, which eventually turned into some sort of C50 operating theatre ("screwdriver" "spanner" "scalpel"
In the morning it was just a case of packing up and everybody left heading for home. People all departed at different times, and eventually just two lonely camper vans were stood in the field and then it was our time to leave. Farewell Rhayader..... see you next year!
So here I am, sat here now, at 3.41 AM still smiling at such an amazing weekend. Organised by amazing people. In amazing countryside.
I really do wish I had taken more photographs, but with so much to photograph it seemed like a chore to get the camera out! Still they will be memories i will never forget!
Again, thank you Fuzz and Prof!!
Eagerly awaiting next year.... Where i hope it will be even better!!
